How Salary Conversion Works
Every conversion runs through one common unit: gross annual pay. Once the calculator has that, every other period is simple division.
Hourly to annual. Multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week, then by 52 weeks. At 40 hours a week that collapses into the famous 2080 rule: annual salary = hourly rate × 2080. So $25 an hour × 2080 hours = $52,000 per year.
Annual to any period. Weekly is annual ÷ 52. Biweekly is annual ÷ 26. Semimonthly is annual ÷ 24. Monthly is annual ÷ 12. To get hourly from a salary, divide by your yearly hours: at 40 hours a week, that is annual ÷ 2080. A $75,000 salary works out to about $36.06 per hour.
Overtime. Under federal rules, non-exempt hourly employees earn 1.5 times their regular rate for hours past 40 in a week. If you work 5 overtime hours a week at $25 an hour, that is $25 × 1.5 × 5 = $187.50 extra per week, or $9,750 over the year. Enter your average weekly overtime above and the calculator folds that premium into your annual total.
Biweekly vs. Semimonthly: The Confusion That Costs People Money
These two get mixed up constantly, and they are not the same. Biweekly means a paycheck every two weeks: 26 paychecks a year, and two months each year contain three paychecks instead of two. Semimonthly means two paychecks per month, usually on the 1st and the 15th: 24 paychecks a year, and you never get three in a month.
On a $52,000 salary, that means $2,000 per biweekly check versus $2,166.67 per semimonthly check. The annual total is identical; only the per-check amount differs. When a job offer says "paid semimonthly," use the 24-paycheck number, not the 26-paycheck one, or you will budget against the wrong check size.
The 2080-Hour Year and Its Limits
The standard full-time year is 2080 hours: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. It is the assumption behind every quick hourly-to-salary chart on the internet, and it is what this calculator defaults to.
It is also an approximation, and three things can move your real number. Unpaid time off shrinks the year: two unpaid weeks off turns 2080 hours into 2000, which turns $25 an hour into $50,000 instead of $52,000. Paid holidays and PTO usually do not shrink it, because you are paid for those hours anyway. Part-time or irregular schedules break the 40-hour assumption entirely, which is why the hours-per-week field is right there at the top. Adjust it to your actual schedule and the math follows.
Everything here is gross pay, meaning before federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and deductions like health insurance or 401(k) contributions. Your take-home pay will be lower, and by how much depends on your tax situation. For a deeper walkthrough of the math, read our guide on how hourly pay is calculated.
Who Uses a Salary Converter
Comparing job offers. An offer of $28 an hour versus a $58,000 salary: $28 × 2080 = $58,240, so they are nearly identical before benefits. Punching both into the converter makes the comparison instant and exact.
Hourly workers budgeting monthly. Hourly pay does not arrive in neat monthly chunks. Converting your rate to a monthly figure tells you what a typical month actually brings in, so rent and bills can be planned around it.
Freelancers setting rates. If you need $80,000 a year to live on, that is about $38.46 an hour at 2080 hours, before accounting for unpaid time between clients. Many freelancers divide by 1000 instead of 2080 to build in a buffer for taxes, downtime, and overhead.
Negotiating raises. A $2-an-hour raise is $4,160 a year at full time. Converting a raise offer into both forms tells you whether it is meaningful or cosmetic.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week, then by 52 weeks. At 40 hours per week that is hourly × 2080. For example, $25 per hour × 2080 hours = $52,000 per year.
What is $25 an hour annually?
$25 per hour works out to $52,000 per year at a standard full-time schedule of 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year (2080 hours). That is gross pay, before taxes and deductions.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by 2080 for a standard full-time role (40 hours per week × 52 weeks). A $75,000 salary equals about $36.06 per hour. Adjust the hours if your schedule differs.
What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?
Biweekly pay arrives every two weeks: 26 paychecks a year, with two months containing three paychecks. Semimonthly pay arrives twice a month: 24 paychecks a year, never three in a month. Divide an annual salary by 26 for biweekly or by 24 for semimonthly.
How many work hours are in a year?
A standard full-time year is 2080 hours: 40 hours per week times 52 weeks. Unpaid time off reduces it — two unpaid weeks off leaves 2000 hours.
Are these results gross or net pay?
Gross pay, before income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any deductions like health insurance or retirement contributions. Net take-home pay depends on your tax bracket, state, and deductions, so this calculator sticks to gross.
How is overtime factored into salary conversion?
Overtime is paid at 1.5 times your regular hourly rate for hours beyond 40 in a week, under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. Enter your average weekly overtime hours above and this calculator adds the overtime premium at time-and-a-half to the annual total.
