How to Calculate a Tip
A tip is just a percentage of the bill. Convert the percent to a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply by the bill amount. Formula: Tip = Bill × (Percent / 100).
Worked example: an $85 bill at 20%. Convert 20% to 0.20, then multiply: 85 × 0.20 = $17.00 tip. Total: 85 + 17 = $102.00. If two people split it evenly, each pays $102.00 / 2 = $51.00.
For a quick mental tip, remember the 10% trick: move the decimal point one place left on the bill to get 10%. On an $85 bill, 10% is $8.50. Double it for 20% ($17), add half of it for 15% ($12.75), or double plus half for 25% ($21.25). No phone required.
Tipping Etiquette, Briefly
Sit-down restaurants: 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is the US norm, with 20% the common default for good service. Exceptional service earns more; genuinely poor service still usually gets at least 10% since the problem may be the kitchen, not the server.
Bars: about $1-2 per drink, more if the drink is complicated or the bar is slammed.
Delivery: 10-20% of the order, with a minimum of $3-5 for small orders. Delivery drivers burn gas and time; a small order at a high percentage still deserves a real tip.
Coffee shops: optional. A dollar in the jar or 10% on a card tab is appreciated, never expected.
Large parties: restaurants often add an automatic gratuity, usually 18-20%, for groups of 6 or 8+. Check the bill before adding your own tip so you don't pay twice. Tipping customs differ by country; in much of Europe and Asia, service charges are built into prices and extra tipping is minimal or unnecessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good tip percentage?
In the US, 15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurants, with 20% the common default for good service. Bars run about $1-2 per drink, and delivery is typically 10-20%. The preset buttons above cover the standard range.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditionally the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. In practice the difference is small on most bills: on an $85 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% on the post-tax total adds only about $1.36. When in doubt, the pre-tax subtotal is the standard.
How do I split a bill evenly?
Enter the bill and tip, then use the stepper to set the number of people. The calculator divides the tip and the total evenly and shows what each person owes. When splitting with an odd total, round each person's share up to the nearest dollar so the group covers the full amount.
What is auto-gratuity?
Auto-gratuity is a service charge the restaurant adds automatically, usually 18-20%, most commonly on parties of 6 or 8+. It is not optional in the way a tip is. Always check the bill first so you don't tip twice on top of it.
Do I tip on alcohol the same way?
Yes, at a sit-down restaurant the full bill including alcohol gets the same percentage tip. At a bar, the norm shifts to about $1-2 per drink rather than a percentage. If bottles or expensive wine inflate the total, many people tip a lower percentage on the alcohol portion.
